Large dog beds are quite easy to find, in online stores and at brick and mortar land pet stores but if you have had the experience of having your large dog go through various beds crushing them flat one after the other you should start researching memory foam dog beds.
Large dog beds come in many styles, from ones with pillows, to round nest type beds with bolsters and many other types, The range and variety seem to be endless.
Having a large dog, one has to look far beyond the looks, shapes and designs, and at the material the bed is made off, or rather what the bed is packed with.
Experience has taught me that the cheaper varieties have stuffing in them that a large dog would crush flat the very first time he or she lay on it, and it would be as if the dog was sleeping on the floor with out any of the support the bed is supposed to offer.
So for me and my large dog it was going to be a memory foam dog bed for a change.
This is how I looked at it, if the whole bed was made of one piece of foam, then balling up and flattening out will not be an issue as is with the other types of beds that were nothing but sacks filled with stuffing.
I was also guided by the various Vet recommendations for a memory foam dog bed that I have been coming across quite recently.
Veterinarians and dog breeders recommend a memory foam dog bed for older dogs, especially if they have problems like arthritis, and also recommend them for large dogs of any age. They also claim that most large breed dogs, about fifty per cent of them, are prone to hip dysplasia.
Having read all this stuff about a memory foam dog bed, I made it a point of duty to ask my Vet when we were there for my dog’s recent annual check-up, and he confirmed that it was true, and that it was also a fact that most large breed dogs do not even present any symptoms of hip dysplasia, until their middle years.
Making sure that you dog’s joints are kept healthy will definitely save you and the dog a lot of worry , trouble and pain later down the track.
I found that choosing the shape of a memory foam dog bed was not much of a problem as the majority of them generally came in a rectangular shape, with the odd few as nest type beds with bolsters.
For me it was remembering my dog’s preferred sleeping position, which is stretched out, so the choice was easy, the normal rectangular shape memory foam dog bed.
The question of how much space a large memory foam dog bed would occupy was never going to be an issue with me, as my priority was giving him the correct support his large body and joints needed.
The good old couch used to be his preferred sleeping and lounging pad, and now, coming to think of it, I cannot blame him for crushing all those dog beds.
The memory foam dog bed is a huge success and he simply loves it. All is well that ends well the memory foam bed is great news for the both of us and the family can finally reclaim the couch for themselves.
